November 2012:
How it all started

I had the vision of developing the most comfortable muzzle for my dogs. I wanted it to fit better than the standard plastic muzzle, which always pinches somewhere because of the stiff material. On the other side I did not want it to become hard as stone like the leather muzzle I use for my big doggie, who drools a lot.

I tinkered with different kind of materials, to find the perfect one. Overnight I had THE idea - BioThane®. I knew the material from other products for dogs - it is perfect! It has the same advantages leather has, without the disadvantages.

Let's get down to business: I build sample muzzles for my two doggies. Back then they were riveted with punchers and hammer.

This is the origin of BUMAS - colorful muzzles made to measure

February 2013:
Bumas goes online and gets to know the shop "Doggerie"

I started to spread my new idea around, including a friend of mine who owns a dog boutique and shop. She was hooked at once and asked me to offer my muzzles in her store.

After some ups and downs and tilt at the windmills of bureaucracy, concerning the right kind of trade, it was done!

I set the first foot into the selling world and went online with my Facebook page.

March 2013:
Help!

Almost immediately, I got the next request from a shop in Vienna - Dogzone. They wanted to sell my BUMAS, too.

I happily confirmed - not suspecting that all my free time would be disappearing soon.

The demand grew and grew, and soon I suspected that I would not be able to supply all the demanded muzzles myself. I needed help!

December 2013:
Cavalry was found

After a lot of looking around, I found the perfect company for the production in Burgenland. I definitely wanted to keep the production in Austria, hence the price-quality ratio was a problem at first. However, I found the best suited solution in Pet-Care.

"My dog doesn't need something like that!"

This is not an ordinary muzzle - Its a BUMAS, the originalSince the beginning of time, the muzzle is one of the most scorned aid for dogs. Your surroundings do judge a dog, is wearing a dog muzzle, as potentially dangerous, or even aggressive. Every dog-owner, whose dog uses a muzzle sometimes, knows the wry look of passer-bys. The reason, why a dog wears the muzzle, is irrelevant. It's almost ironic a muzzle causes such fear, because it prevents of the danger in the first place!

Although, the truth is quite a bit different: a muzzle not only offers a great deal of benefits for the dog, but for the owner, too!

Granted, a muzzle is a safeguard against aggressive or vicious dogs. But in this case it not only helps to train a dog, it also can assure the owner to be more relaxed in situations the dog may act aggressively, without escalating the situation. Also while re-integrating a dog or running off-leash, a muzzle is worth a mint.

Another good reason accustoming a dog early with muzzletraining to wear a muzzle, as soon as possible, is going to your vet or animal clinic. You don't know, if or when a dog gets ill and your vet demands your dog to use a muzzle. If this happens, you don't want to increase the pressure on your dog, because it's not accustomed to a muzzle.

Who doesn't know this: the dog is like a vacuum cleaner, scooping everything up, what is even remotely edible, while on the walk? That's yet another good reason, a muzzle lightens the life of the owner.

Additionally imagine you live in a neighbourhood, where mischievous dog haters are around, and you don't want to think about poison baits, when your dog is off the leash. A good dog muzzle is the solution! Your dog can run free without being endangered to be poisoned.

Many dog owners want their dogs to accompany them on vacations. You will have to inform yourself exactly about keeping of dogs and muzzle duty. The rules can even change from county to county, not to mention when travelling to foreign countries. Even on public transport your dog has to wear a muzzle, at least in Austria.

So, how do you choose the right one?

BUMAS is build to protect dogs from poisonous foods and baitsThe range to choose from is vast and your pick should be good to insure fast and easy accustoming, instead of being a torture for both sides. Two things are important: the right size and a perfect fit. The price should be your secondary concern, because a humane muzzle should be a one-time-expense.

Mouth loop:

A mouth loop is no muzzle. It only prevents biting, if the loop is fastened very tight around the mouth, inhibiting the dog from opening the mouth at all. But this also stops the dog from panting and drinking, which will lead to overheating. Therefore, a mouth loop is only useful, when used for a short period of time, e.g. at the vet's.

Plastic muzzle:

The variety of plastic muzzles is enormous, so you have to look for first-class workmanship. Lower quality products tend to get cracky, if they get too cold or exposed to a certain amount of force. Giving the dog a treat can be difficult, too, depending on make. Plastic muzzles gather points on light weight and easy cleaning.

Metal muzzle:

These heavy duty muzzles fuel fear in humans by their looks. They are heavy-weight and can get very cold in Winter. Metal muzzles are positively sturdy and prevent biting effectively. But that's also a bad thing, because the risk of getting injured or bruised is much higher than by any other type. Giving the dog a treat through "the bars", typically is no problem.

Leather muzzle:

Muzzles made from Leather are light-weight and provide nice comfort, at least when they are new. Many dogs are annoyed by the strong scent of leather and tannins respectively. The accustoming by using liver pâté on the inside of the muzzle is not possible. Keeping the muzzle in a hygienic state is nearly not possible. In time leather muzzles are getting stiff and the good comfort factor is gone.

BioThane® muzzle:

This material is light-weight, mould and mildew resistant, very strong, and easy to clean. BUMAS is the first manufacturer using BioThane® to produce custom-made muzzles. To reduce the fear spread by muzzles, BUMAS offers a wide variety of lively colours to choose from. The material provides very good comfort, treating is easy, and even using liver pâté whilst accustoming your dog to the BUMAS is no problem at all.

At long last I'd like to re-emphasize the right and positive flavoured accustoming of the dog to any muzzle. You can't start soon enough with the muzzle training. If the puppy is accustomed to a soft basket muzzle, the adult dog will cope with it easily. No stress. No impairment. You could compare this to wearing glasses.

Muzzle training

How to accustom your doggie to BUMAS:

Dog training without stress - thanks to a perfect fitting BUMAS muzzleStep 1:

Grease some cream cheese or liver pâté on the inside of your BUMAS dog muzzle and let your dog lick it. Repeat this daily - until your dog puts his/her nose voluntarily into your BUMAS as soon as he/she sees it.

Step 2:

While you dog licks the cream cheese out of the BUMAS, close the muzzle on the back and keep feeding your doggie with treats through the front part of the BUMAS. After a couple of seconds open the seal and take off the BUMAS again. Repeat this a couple of times daily.

Step 3:

Put the BUMAS muzzle on your dog and close it. Feed him one or two treats. Lure your dog with the next treat into taking a step or two. Praise him/her highly and take the BUMAS off again. Repeat this a couple of times daily and slowly increase the number of steps.

Step 4:

At this stage the BUMAS can be worn outside on a walk for a couple of steps. Your dog can still be rewarded with treats if necessary. Gently prevent any attempts of your dog to take off the BUMAS. Start lengthening the time period you doggie wears the muzzle and decrease the amount of treats.
